Humayun Kabir will contest from Rejinagar and Naoda; fields Firhad Hakim's ex-son-in-law from Kandi

Former All India Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir has announced that he will contest from two constituencies in Murshidabad district in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, marking a significant shift in his electoral strategy. Now heading the Janata Unnayan Party, Kabir has chosen to fight from Rejinagar and Naoda, opting out of his current seat, Bharatpur. Meanwhile, Humayun announced that Yasir Haider, ex-son-in-law of Firhad Hakim, will not contest from the Kolkata Port seat. Instead, he has been fielded for the Kandi seat against Apurba Sarkar.

The decision comes shortly after the TMC released its candidate list for 291 seats. Kabir, who had won Bharatpur in 2021 with a margin of over 43,000 votes, has decided not to defend the constituency this time. Instead, his move to contest from two new seats is being seen as a calculated attempt to strengthen his political footing after parting ways with the ruling party.

The development also mirrors the strategy of senior leader Suvendu Adhikari, who is contesting from multiple constituencies, adding a competitive edge to the elections. Meanwhile, Rejinagar and Naoda are currently held by the TMC, though both seats have seen shifts in political control over the years, with Congress having previously maintained influence in the region.
